Tips for Avoiding The Most Common Problems With CPAP Machines

Sizing of the CPAP Mask – A good comfortable fit is essential. Your doctor and CPAP supplier will work closely with you to ensure that you receive a mask that is the right size and style for you. Masks are also adjustable and your CPAP supplier can show you how to adjust it to get to the most comfortable fit.

  1. If you move around a lot in your sleep full face masks that cover your mouth and nose provide the most stable fit.
  2. If you wear glasses or read with the mask on nasal pillows that fit under your nose and provide straps that cover less of your face may work better for you and are less cumbersome.

How do I get used to wearing the CPAP device? It may take a bit of time and effort to get used to your CPAP device. Wear your mask for short periods initially while you are awake. Add the air pressure with the mask and hose on during the daytime while you awake for short periods until you get accustomed to how that feels. Once you feel comfortable during the day switch to consistently using the CPAP device every time you sleep. It may be difficult but stay with the every night habit or use for several weeks and then if it still feels off contact your CPAP provider to possibly adjust some settings for you.

Once I started using my machine my nose become stuffy and extremely dry. Nasal sprays may help with this and can usually be found with your CPAP supplier. Some CPAP machines come with a heated humidifier which can help. Your doctor may also prescribe a nasal steroid spray if the problem continues. An improperly fitting mask, “leaky”, may also contribute to stuffiness or dry nose issues. Talk with your CPAP supplier or doctor to eliminate this problem quickly.

Claustrophobic feelings when using the mask. Sleeping usually correlates with relaxing. Some people find it very difficult to get used to using the mask. Take baby steps- holding only the mask next to your face for small amounts of time until you feel comfortable. Next add the straps until you feel comfortable. Remove the straps and try the mask and hose next. Add low pressure to the CPAP machine still without straps. Once you’ve accomplished that relax and trying everything awake. Try sleeping with it on next. Talk to your doctor or CPAP supplier if you still feeling claustrophobic to get some other suggestions or different style or size of mask.

If you have problems tolerating forced air – There should be a ramp feature on your machine. This feature allows you to start with low pressure and then gradually increases to your prescription setting as you fall asleep. The rate of ramp can be adjusted by your doctor or CPAP supplier if you are having problems. BIPAP machines can help if you continue to have problems with your CPAP machine. This is a change that would need to be administered by your doctor.

Waking up with your mask removed – This is a pretty common occurrence. Chin Straps and full masks will certainly help reduce nightly removal of your mask. If you still have problems you can try setting an alarm during the evening to check on your mask. You may find yourself setting the alarm later and later as you get used to the mask.

Dry Mouth – Sleeping with your mouth open or breathing through your mouth during sleep combined with your CPAP machine may cause dry mouth. Chin Straps, full face masks and CPAP machine with a heated humidifier will help reduce this irritation

Do you find the noise annoying? – Check your device’s air filter to make sure it is clean and unblocked. Most of the newer machines are relatively silent so noise levels shouldn’t be to irritating. Check in with your CPAP supplier or doctor if you’ve checked the air filter and are still having problems.
